Character History:

Very little is known about Alphys’ childhood or upbringing, except that she used to live on the same street as Bratty and Catty, who say she was “like a big sister”, “showing them the best places to find trash”, and “always collecting these weird cartoons”. Alphys’ obsession for human things lead her to attending Hapstablook/Mettaton’s Human Fanclub as the only other member, and eventually showing him designs of a robot body she wanted to build for him. After the first form was built, Mettaton became distant for a life of fame as the Underground’s main celebrity, and Alphys began to delay finishing his second body in fear that he wouldn’t want to speak to her again after it was finished. However, Asgore, the King of the Monsters, took notice to Mettaton, and thinking that Alphys had managed to build a robot with a Soul, appointed her the new royal scientist.

Here’s where things start to go wrong, since Asgore saw “scientist”, assumed all science is the same science, and started asking a roboticist to do biological studies on how to recreate Soul power so monsters could escape the Underground. Eager to please, craving approval, and possibly partially because she thought Asgore had great arms, Alphys accepted, beginning her study into the nature of the Soul in a fancy new lab in Hotland. For her research, Asgore loaned her six human Souls that had been captured from other fallen humans in the Underground. Through studying humans, she manages to isolate and extract from the Souls what allows humans bodies to persist after death- a power she calls “Determination”, describing it as “the will to keep living… the resolve to change fate”. Asgore provides her with the bodies of monsters that have “fallen down”, those close to death and dissolving into dust, so she can isolate the monster Souls. Alphys also realized she needed a vessel to be able to command the Souls- Humans can’t absorb human souls, just as monsters can’t absorb monster souls. Without having a human to command them, she decides on something that’s neither human nor monster- a golden flower in Asgore’s garden, the first one that bloomed after his son’s death. She takes it without telling Asgore, and secretly injects it with Determination- the flower that would become Flowey. But nothing was working- the monsters bodies weren’t disintegrating into dust, the vessel wasn’t responding, and people were beginning to ask questions about where the dust from their loved ones had gone. Panicked, Alphys begins injecting determination into everything, including the monster’s bodies, in a last-ditch attempt to get something to happen. And, amazingly, it does.

One of the bodies opens its eyes.

From there, everything seems like a success, albeit not the one Alphys was planning. All of the monsters who seemed close to death wake up, perfectly healthy. Despite not having the intended outcome, Alphys returns the Souls to Asgore, hides the vessel back in Asgore’s garden, and makes plans to send everyone home.

This would, of course, be a happy ending, if Alphys’ life up to this point wasn’t something out of a horror show made out of a culmination of her anxieties. Unfortunately, it is.

What Alphys hadn’t realized was that determination exists in humans because humans have a solid form; because Monsters don’t have enough mass, due to their magical creation, the determination began to break them down. The monsters bodies began to melt together, creating the Amalgamates, creatures made up of fused parts of the broken monster forms. Not quite solid and incredibly animalistic, the Amalgamates were grotesque concoctions of the people they once were, and Alphys was paralyzed. She had promised to return the monsters to their families, and now they were worse than dead. More than that, the flower she used as the vessel went missing from Asgore’s garden. She had failed her experiment to free everyone, and unintentionally created something worse. Unwilling to leave them but too ashamed to tell anyone what she had done, Alphys became a complete recluse. She barely left the lab, stopped answering her phone to even Asgore, and started watching the Underground through screens and cameras to feel included. The only place she would venture out to visit was the garbage dump, saying “It’s my element” and carefully avoiding everyone who would know her.

One day, out at the dump, Alphys stood at the edge of the drop-off of the waterfall, looking down into the abyss, when she was startled out of her silence by Undyne, asking her about her thoughts. After rambling for “hours” about where she thought the abyss went, she began making friends with Undyne by inviting her to watch anime and claiming it was human history. Pretending to be an expert on humans, she begins showing Undyne all of her shows to get her excited about the human world, and so Undyne will have a reason to keep speaking to her.

Around the time Frisk arrives in the Underground, Alphys manages to see them on one of their video cameras and begins watching their journey through the Underground. Originally, she had wanted to see what they were going to do, but after seeing them spare Papyrus, she wanted to befriend and become important to them. Alphys starts by greeting Frisk when they arrive in Hotland and updates their phone, along with signing them up for the Underground’s top social network, so they can stay in contact. Despite offering her phone number and trying to help get Frisk through the puzzles, she mostly updates her social media about anime and how much she hates calling people on the phone. She does manage to help Frisk out of a variety of Mettaton’s TV shows and antics using upgrades she put into their phone (such as a jetpack and a gun for some reason), up until Frisk is about to leave the Core. At that point, Mettaton betrays Alphys and locks her out of the final room where he was supposed to be defeated, revealing Alphys was lying about needing to save Frisk. She reactivated puzzles, created problems, and had Mettaton pretend to try and kill them so she could feel like a protagonist in Frisk’s story. All of the challenges Frisk had faced up to now were created by Alphys so she could seem important. Alphys manages to tell Frisk about Mettaton’s switch before she’s cut off, allowing Mettaton to switch to his EX form and drain his battery power. She finally makes it into the room after the battle, relieved Mettaton wasn’t hurt, but having to admit that what Mettaton said was true. Following Frisk down the hall to the elevator to New Home, she finally blurts out that she had lied about one more thing- Frisk will have to take Asgore’s Soul to escape, since the barrier requires a human and a monster Soul to get through. After, she turns tail and runs back to her lab.

While hiding out at her lab, Alphys sees a letter tucked under her door, and though afraid of the contents, she resolves to open it and sees it’s someone asking her on a date. She opens the door thinking it’s a joke, but finds Frisk on the other side, and believes they wrote the note because it wasn’t signed. She says she doesn’t think she believes to be forgiven, but not wanting to hurt Frisk’s feelings and to make it up to them, she agrees to go on the date. Alphys tries to give Frisk presents obviously pertaining to Undyne to “raise their affection statistic”, eventually becoming embarrassed and dragging Frisk off to the garbage dump. Once there, however, Alphys sees Undyne waiting and hides; once Undyne leaves, Alphys admits to her crush but says she’s too afraid to let Undyne get close to her, because of all the lies she’s told about who she is. With Frisk’s urging, she agrees she should tell the truth, but doesn’t know how to do it, so ends up roleplaying with Frisk what her confession to Undyne should be. Halfway through, however, Alphys gets too caught up with it and begins screaming how much she loves Undyne and wants to kiss her, which draws Undyne’s attention. Finally, Alphys breaks down and tells Undyne about lying to her about anime, food, and her activities, saying she just wanted Undyne to think she was cool and smart, not some “nerdy loser”. As a response, because this is incredibly romantic, Undyne dunks Alphys into a nearby garbage can and yells that those things don’t matter to her; that she likes Alphys because of Alphys’ personality, and how much she cares about the things she likes. She tells Alphys she wants to help her be happy with who she is, and sends Alphys off for training with Papyrus.

Papyrus lets Alphys off her training “early” and when she arrives back at her lab, Alphys realizes she has to come clean to all of her lies, so she can be a better person. She leaves a note outside of the true lab saying that if someone finds it, they should come and see what she had done. She also thanks Frisk for their support, saying she was afraid if she didn’t do this, instead of telling the truth, she might’ve “run away or done something… cowardly”. Going down into the lab, the power goes out, and in trying to fix it, Alphys runs into Frisk, seeing that they were also restoring the power and had found out about the Amalgamates through her lab entries. Again thanking Frisk for their help, she says she’s going to return the Amalgamates to their families, and it’ll be easier with the support of her friends.

Alphys isn’t seen again until the final confrontation with Asgore, realizing Flowey as one of her experiments upon his arrival to the scene. Alphys supports Frisk and tells them they can do anything, before being absorbed with the rest of the monsters by Flowey to allow him to become Asriel. She, like everyone else, doesn’t remember the exact events of what happens with Flowey, and is there to greet Frisk when they wake up. Finally, along with everyone else, she leaves the Underground for the surface, and is eventually seen getting a kiss from Undyne at the beach, which causes her to pass out.

Abilities/Special Powers: Alphys is a Monster, and therefore made mostly of magic and little physical matter. This makes her as weak as other monsters, and it’s implied she can use magic offensively, but her abilities are never seen in-game. The single time we see any of her attacks, they’re the mechanical shooters and bombs used by Mettaton in his boss battle. She also talks about being physically weak and not a good fighter, nor is she willing to fight and prefers to run and hide.

She is, however, a very talented mechanical engineer, coder, and biologist, having built up to three very intricate robot bodies and performed a host of experiments that created the Amalgamates and Flowey. She manages to upgrade the protagonist’s phone in a matter of seconds, including adding dimensional storage boxes, a key-chain, and upgraded service and function. We also see her hacking into various systems in the Underground, though it’s unknown how good she is at this, as she admits to lying about certain actions during the player’s travels through Hotland.

Third-Person Sample: Alphys sighed, leaning on her worktable, idly chewing on her pen cap while looking over her computer. It had been a while since she’d slept, but she wasn’t worried or thinking about that- she had too much to get done before Undyne said she was coming over tomorrow, and she wanted to make sure everything was out of the way. She had just managed to get her hands on a new DVD, and she was pretty sure by the box art it was gonna be something Undyne would love. It’s fine, she thought to herself, clicking through UnderNet notifications, I have plenty of time until--

A loud alarm from her phone distracted her from her thoughts, fumbling through her lab pockets to get to her phone and—oh god. It was her alarm. Her alarm to wake up. Meaning it was morning already, meaning she had way less time, meaning Undyne was almost here and the Amalgamates hadn’t been fed and UNDYNE WAS ALMOST HERE—

Shrieking to herself and half-falling out of her chair, she grabbed the bag of dog food hastily from beside her fridge and scurrying into the elevator, texting Undyne as she went. Hey, uh, might be running a little late, just let yourself in when you get here! Mashing send and stumbling out of the elevator, she ran with the dog food towards the main sleeping area, fumbling with her card key to undo the lock. As soon as it opened, she was besieged by Endogeny, knocking her to the floor and causing her to let out a tiny shriek. “H-Hey, good morning! Uhm, I think its morning. A-Anyway, I brought breakfast!” Pushing past the overexcited dog-creature, she brought the food over to the middle of the room, quickly being encircled by the others. “Sorry I can’t stay long today, uh, I’m meeting someone! I mean I’m meeting her, you know, Undyne, l-like I’ve told you about. I hope it goes well! I mean, I think it will. I hope so. Oh god I hope so.” Turning away from where she had laid out the food, she scurried back towards the door. “I promise I’ll come down and see you later!”

Running out of the elevator as soon as it docked, she took the stairs two at a time to her closet, throwing on a new lab coat and cleaning her glasses on her shirt. “Okay, tons of time…” She muttered to herself, “Just gotta, uh, just gotta look okay, and not like you were up all night on the internet! R-Right. You can do this, you can--”

The sound of the door opening made Alphys jump just a little, biting her lip to stop from yelling a response as she could hear Undyne barge in to the ground floor. Taking a deep breath, she ran her hands down her front, pulling at her clothes until she thought they looked presentable. Heading to the stairs back down, she let out a deep sigh. It’s gonna be fine, Alphys. She likes you. Just remember to keep it together. Remember who she thinks you are. Sucking in another breath, she stepped out into the main room, putting on her biggest smile.

“H-Hi, Undyne! I hope it wasn’t too hard to get here again…”

First-Person Sample:

[The camera turns on upside-down seems to be shaking quite a bit, focusing in on a scaly yellow face heavily biting her lip. It seems to be rapidly moving or otherwise broken until it gets placed on a nearby table and stabilizes, though still… upside down. Thankfully, the device isn’t broken- Alphys’ hands can be seen in-view, shaking.]

Uh, h-hello! Is anyone there? U-Uhm, t-this is, this is Dr. Alphys! I don’t, uh, I don’t know where I am. And, if this is some sort of joke, I don’t appreciate…

[She trails off, getting close to the camera again and finally turning it right side up, lifting it off the table and back to a close-up of her face.] I’ve never even s-seen a device like this before… I think it’s broadcasting somewhere? What h-happens when I do—

[The feed cuts out. She hit the power.]
